Answers to frequently asked questions

Coboc E-Drive

Which electric drive system powers my Coboc e-bike?

All Coboc e-bikes are based on our in-house development, the “Coboc E-Drive” platform, which is an integral component of all our vehicles. It is easy and simple to use: A power-button at the user-interface activates electric support. The performance of the drive-system is directly and smartly tuned with the Coboc rider’s effort.

Can I choose among several electric support levels?

Coboc E-Drive automatically and intelligently attunes motor support to the driving situation. The Torque Sensor, mounted in the bottom bracket, measures the crank movement as well as the rider’s torque moment. The Coboc Controller evaluates the results exactly and, correspondingly, controls the electric motor sensitively. This makes a choice of determined support-levels almost obsolete. Nevertheless, starting in spring 2018, we will offer a possibility to adapt motor support individually to the driver’s preferences, via the Coboc App. If you have installed the current software and if your bike is App-compatible, you will be able to modify the following parameters:

This parameter determines basic motor support. By modifying this value, you can either increase or reduce the constant motor support, independent of your individual pedaling power.

Adjusts the proportion of driver-performance and motor power. Choosing high values means choosing strong motor support. Whereas lower values reduce the motor support of human power.

Here you can influence the starting behavior of your e-bike. The higher the value, the speedier your bike starts. If you prefer a softer start, choose lower values.

ATTENTION: The range will be reduced if you increase one or more of these values. Lower adjustments can, in turn, increase the range.

Battery and engine

What kind of battery technology is hidden in Coboc bikes?

The lithium-ion battery is manufactured in Germany and mounted inside the down-tube. Consisting of high-quality LG round cells it has a voltage of 36 V and a capacity of 352 Wh (9,6 Ah).

How many kilometers can I travel on one battery-charge?

This depends a lot on your individual driving behavior. On average, it’s about 80 km. Hilly terrain reduces the range, but 100-km cross-country rides on flat terrain are also possible.

What is your experience with overall battery durability?

The lifetime of a battery – good maintenance provided – is enough for about 30 000 km travelled. See also FAQ: ‘storage & maintenance’.

Can I remove the battery?

The battery needn’t be removed for charging. Invisibly hidden inside the down-tube, the battery is perfectly protected against theft and unfavorable weather conditions. Only on direction of Coboc competent persons who have attended special Coboc-instruction courses are allowed to open the down-tube from below in order to carry out work on the drive system.

Why don’t you provide an additional battery pack?

As the battery pack is integrated in the frame it is best-possibly protected from climatic influences, and from theft. Doing without an additional casing we reach an unbeatably low total weight for all our models. Moreover, removable battery packs are incompatible with the purist Coboc design.

What about battery-characteristics during the winter?

At lower temperatures of below 0°C, battery performance and maximum range of your Coboc bike may temporarily be reduced. With temperature rising, full performance will be reached again. Generally, low temperatures don’t damage the battery.

What must be done in case of high temperatures?

High temperatures should be avoided. If possible, do not leave your bike directly in the sun! On hot days: safety-shutdown of the battery at temperatures over 60°C. The bike can be used again only after the battery has cooled down.

Can Coboc Bikes recuperate energy?

No, energy recuperation is not possible, and, for several reasons, no option for the future. Motors capable of energy recuperation are heavy-weight, and cause a permanent braking effect. Thus, the bike wouldn’t wheel free if power were switched off. Technically speaking, only a negligible part of the braking power can be fed back into the battery, because braking procedures are short and involve very high performance of which the motor can recuperate only a very small part.

How much does a battery- change cost?

The standard price for battery exchange is 899.-€.

What is worth knowing about the electric motor?

At a rated voltage of 36 V and an average power of 250 W, it is almost invisible in the rear-wheel hub. It is a geared drive motor, which is – at equal torque moment – explicitly smaller and lighter than direct drive motors. Moreover, an integrated free-wheel clutch prevents the motor from rotating continuously and thus causing a permanent braking effect. That’s why riding the bike is so pleasantly comfortable and easy even if power is switched off or when the battery is empty.

Control and charging

How can I switch my Coboc bike on and off?

Just press the power-button at the user interface on the down side of the top tube.

Can I switch my Coboc bike on and off during the ride?

Yes, of course! You can also operate the power switch during the ride.

How can I turn on the light on model SEVEN?

In case your Coboc bike has lighting equipment (product line SEVEN), you can switch the light on and off by pressing the power button for 3 seconds. This also works if E-Drive is switched off. If your bike is connected to the app, you can also control the light system by tipping on the light symbol.

How do I recharge my Coboc bike?

You can find the charging connection next to the power button on the down side of the top tube. Just plug in the magnetic plug, connect the recharger with a socket – and your Coboc bike is being recharged.

How much time do I need for charging?

A complete battery-charging process from 0% to 100% with the Coboc recharger will take 2 ½ hours. After 2 hours, however, the battery gauge will already be at 90%. Charging time for the remaining 10% is longer – about 30 minutes.

Which is the ideal temperature for charging?

The ideal battery temperature is between 5°C and 35°C. In order to protect the battery, the electronic system prevents the charging process at battery temperatures below 0°C and above 40°C.

LED display

What can I read from the LED display?

From the LED display in the top tube you can read the battery gauge. Moreover, errors can be indicated here:

If the LEDs are flashing red, it is recommended to visit your Coboc dealer.

4 LEDs flashing red

You should first check the connection of the motor cable. Are the plugs connected correctly?

Storage and maintenance

What do I have to keep in mind when I want to store my bike?

Good maintenance provided, the overall battery durability can amount to over 30 000 km. The ideal storage temperature for the battery is 20°C. The battery ages twice as fast with every increase of temperature by 5°C. Lower storage temperatures don’t do damage to the battery, but aren’t of any advantage, either. In any case, take care to store the bike at a dry place! If the bike is switched off, the battery gauge will be reduced by maximum 10% a month. If you don’t switch the bike on, or recharge it during a period of 30 days, it will change into a rest-mode. Now the battery gauge is reduced by maximum 4% a month. After it has changed into rest-mode, the bike can no longer be switched on with the power-button on the User Interface, but it can be re-activated with the recharger. By all means avoid that the battery discharges completely! It would be permanently defective or, in case of extremely deep discharge, even finally damaged. Therefore charge the battery completely before storing the bike for the winter or for a longer period of time. With the battery fully charged, you can store the bike for up to 8 months without recharging. After 8 months, however, you should connect it to the recharger and control battery gauge. Storing the bike at a battery gauge of 60-80% (4 LEDs) is even a little safer for the battery.

What should I do to maintain my Coboc Bike?

Oil should be applied regularly, but sparingly, to the chain. Never clean your Coboc bike under a hard water-jet, e.g. from a high-pressure cleaner. The high pressure might allow water to soak in to the sealed parts, which then can cause damage to the electric construction. Moreover, we recommend having prevention maintenance carried out at your Coboc specialist dealer’s once a year.

Who is the first contact for Coboc-riders?

If clients have any questions or problems, they will contact the dealers’ shops where they have purchased their bikes.

What do I have to do if my Coboc Bike cannot be switched on?

1. Please, connect with recharger. The bike may be in the rest-mode (see FAQ “storage and maintenance)

2. Start a reset (press power button for at least 20 seconds)
If the bike still does´t turn on the clients contact the dealers’ shops where they have purchased their bikes.
